06 essential steps
Tank & swimming space
Mahseer are active river-dwelling fish. A longer aquarium (at least 4 feet) with a secure lid and ample swimming space is recommended. Always plan the aquarium according to the fish’s adult size rather than its current size. A water temperature of 24–28°C and a pH of 6.8–7.8 are recommended. Stable water conditions are more important than constantly adjusting the parameters.
Filtration & oxygen
Provide mature biological filtration, effective mechanical filtration and strong surface movement. Good oxygenation is especially important for active fish and warmer water.
Stable water quality
Use dechlorinated water and keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, pH or water chemistry, and test the aquarium regularly.
Feeding routine
Offer a suitable high-quality staple food in controlled portions. Feed only what can be consumed promptly, remove leftovers and adjust the diet according to species, size and condition.
Tank mates & observation
Choose tank mates with compatible size, activity and temperament. Observe appetite, breathing, swimming, fins and body condition daily so changes are noticed early.
Routine maintenance
Perform regular partial water changes—at least 30% once a week. Maintain proper filtration flow and clean the mechanical filter media, but avoid cleaning or replacing all biological media at once, as this may destroy beneficial bacteria. A stable environment is more important than frequently adjusting water parameters.
